As the result of the study conducted by Michael Sivak and Omer Tsimhoni at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute in Ann Arbor they concluded that the average fuel efficiency of US vehicles has only risen by just 3 miles per gallon since the Ford Model T days and has shifted barely since 1991.
As response from the two events: the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the 1973 oil embargo by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), on 1991 improvements had been made.
